BioPretty much the definitive trait, Yuna-wise, is her massive, massive martyr complex. No, seriously. You've never seen one like this; it's almost all-encompassing, save for the fact that she met someone who would manage, through no words saying as much, to convince her that there was more to live for than there was to die for in this world-- friends, laughter, even love. Yuna's the Stereotypical White Mage; she's gentle and sweet, and always has a kind word for everyone. If anyone could be considered an Earth (or, uh, Spira) Angel, it's Yuna.
Well, except for that stubborn streak. You see, you can't really tell Yuna what to do; she makes her judgments (sometimes slowly, sometimes snap), but once she's decided on her course of action, it's set and there's nothing that's going to stand in her way. It's this stubborn streak that made her decide to become a Summoner, and the same streak made her decide that the current system of Summoner for Spira was Not Going to Cut It.

Yuna was intended to have been born in the Al Bhed Home of the time, as her mother had insisted that she be with family for the birth, though her brother Cid refused at first to be at the bedside. However, the mass majority of Al Bhed people considered her mother to be a traitor of sorts, as for Al Bhed women, marrying Yevonites and diluting the bloodline was Simply Not Done. Thus, driven from Home, Yuna's mother birthed her one-day-famous daughter in Rin's first travel agency, with Braska by her side. Unfortunately, her mother caught septic from the birth in relatively unsterile conditions and while she survived, she was weakened considerably by it, her Al Bhed constitution all but destroyed with the blow to her system. Shortly after her third birthday, Yuna lost her mother and unborn sibling to complications during her mother's second pregnancy. While she was still too young to understand the loss, Braska packed up all of his and his dead wife's mementos and carted his daughter to be raised in Bevelle's Yevonite churches as he decided to and thus prepared to begin the Pilgrimage to defeat Sin. For three years, Yuna saw her father each morning before they both went off to their respective trainings-- she in letters and numbers and Yevonite teachings, he in how to call forth the Aeons from the Fayth. She was cared for by a Ronso caretaker, and each night she was long asleep before Braska returned. Rest days were better-- the father and daughter team would spend the entire day, dawn until the stars came out, together in family activities. But that all ended when Yuna turned six and her father became a true Summoner, calling forth the Bevellian Aeon, Bahamut. It wasn't a week later that he left on Pilgrimage, giving Kimahri strict instructions to take her to a safe place. He had friends in Besaid, he had told the Ronso, and they would take the girl in.
Fast-forward nine years. Yuna had grown up lovely, the entire community of Besaid doting upon her for her sweet nature and her giving personality. Braska's Calm had lasted a number of years-- longer than most any Calm so far. The cities of Spira had begun to hope that perhaps Sin was gone for good, when there was an attack on a small village near Luca, decimating the population there. Two of Yuna's childhood friends, both once guardians for a failed Summoner, had returned from the area, Wakka's brother Chappu having been killed in the attack. Yuna had been pensive for a while, and when she saw their faces, the etchings of loss on them, she seemed to come to a decision. Soon after the funeral services were held, Yuna announced that she'd decided to follow in her father's footsteps and to become a Summoner.
No one was really surprised, but that didn't mean they were happy with her choice. But she had all the support she needed, and the priest in Besaid Temple began instructing her in the delicacies of her chosen craft. Finally the day of reckoning came, and she entered the Chamber of the Fayth. She achieved the Aeon of Valefor, but upon leaving the chamber, she fainted... and awoke in Purgatorium.
